Afro-Creole Languages Week is an annual global celebration of the languages that were born from the creative linguistic genius of African peoples as a form of resistance during the horrors of enslavement and the Maafa.

Spoken by more than 200 million people, these languages connect communities across Africa, the Caribbean, North America, South America and beyond.

Afro-Creole Languages Week is an initiative created by Ifè Thompson.

Afro-Creole languages carry African knowledge systems, histories, philosophies and traditions that have been passed from generation to generation. Yet despite their global reach, they continue to be overlooked in education, public life and policy.

Every year, from 1–8 September, we bring together:

Communities, Educators, Artists, Researchers, Policymakers and Organisations from around the world to celebrate Afro-Creole languages, advance language justice and help ensure these living languages continue to thrive for generations to come.
