Office for Diaspora Affairs, Ghana, Announces Official Partnership and Endorsement of Afro Creole Languages Week
ACCRA, GHANA — The Office for Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency of the Republic of Ghana has formally partnered with and endorsed Afro Creole Languages Week, marking a historic milestone for global Pan-African collaboration and linguistic justice.
In its official endorsement letter, the office noted that the initiative is an "important international platform for cultural dialogue and diaspora engagement." The office also stated that it "welcomes the vision pioneering this initiative and commends the commitment to advancing linguistic heritage, cultural understanding, and historical consciousness among communities of people of African descent across the world."
The endorsement emphasises Ghana's unique position within this historical narrative. The office recognised that "the linguistic and cultural continuities linking the Akan people of Ghana with communities across the Caribbean and the wider Atlantic world remain enduring reminders of a shared past that continues to shape contemporary identities." Furthermore, it noted that "by fostering greater appreciation of afro-creole languages and their historical origins, the initiative contributes meaningfully to broader efforts aimed at cultural preservation, heritage, and education and pan-african cooperation."
Ife Thompson, Founder of Afro Creole Languages Week, expressed profound excitement regarding the new alliance, highlighting the deep historical weight of receiving this endorsement from Ghana—the first nation on the African continent to achieve freedom from British colonial rule, and a country that recently led the historic reparatory justice resolution adopted at the United Nations in March 2026.
"We are absolutely delighted in this partnership," said Thompson. "It is deeply meaningful to us that—just as Haiti stood as the first free Black republic in the world outside the continent following the Haitian Revolution—Ghana, the first nation on the African continent to break free from British colonial rule, is now the first African country to endorse Afro Creole Languages Week. To have a nation with that monumental history step forward as our first continental partner is a powerful testament to Ghana's enduring legacy of pioneering support and hope for African peoples worldwide. We see this as a true commitment to the vision of Kwame Nkrumah from its inception—for Ghana to be a beacon of Pan-Africanism, a legacy that extends directly to language and linguistic justice. This endorsement seamlessly mirrors Ghana's historic leadership on the world stage, including introducing the landmark reparatory justice resolution passed at the United Nations declaring the transatlantic trade of enslaved Africans the gravest crime against humanity. The official partnership paves the way for upcoming collaborative events, educational programmes, and cross-cultural dialogues scheduled throughout the global observance of Afro Creole Languages Week.
